Sing Leaps and Bounds with the MSO
Melbourne is in Stage 4 restrictions and we need your help. Join the MSO Chorus and musicians of the MSO to sing an ode to our city, as part of a special video project dedicated to all Melburnians.
Picture the opening salvo of Paul Kelly's Leaps and Bounds, "I'm high on a hill / Looking over the bridge / To the MCG..." delivered by more than 100 voices. It's part of the MSO's commitment to #KeepTheMusicGoing throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and bring a smile to those in our town doing it tough.

Hope this email finds you all well and bearing up under the various levels of restriction. Fear not though choristers - we may have the antidote for these lockdown blues... the second Virtual Soul Choir project is here! The return. The sequel! Yes I. (not a typo but Caribbean slang!)
We have been commissioned by Della Vreeland from the Baha'i community to create an online choir video for our original work, Song of Celebration. You can read more about it online. We would love you to be involved!
When you go to the virtualsoulchoir.com website you will find the following:
- the introduction video explaining what you need to do to get involved
- conducting videos - choose your vocal range
- mp3 recording of full arrangement
- the lyrics
- the donation button (to keep us singing!)
- submissions close Sunday 6 September
Spoiler alert: There will also be a very special element in the video that you won't see or hear until it's launched!!
Also the fortnightly Monday Night Soul Infusion (MNSI) sessions are going really well! Thanks everyone who has joined us so far. There are two more in this term.

SING IN SEPTEMBER
Singers, all over Melbourne, and all over the world, are missing their regular opportunities to connect through song and friendship, in halls and churches.
The Boite has developed an online day of singing to help to fill the gap. Presenters from the UK, Canada and Melbourne will bring their expertise to offer new songs and opportunities to singers here and across the globe in the form of 3x90-minute workshops presented online.
Featuring:
- Su Hart (UK): Composer, choir leader and a world expert on the singing of the Central African Rainforest People, the Baka. suhart.com
- Matt Knight (Canada): Contemporary folk songs from North America that nurture the soul, speaking to the rhythms of life.

Maggie has been fully occupied during lockdown, see her efforts below! Fabulous, Maggie and Rod!
You were asking what we were doing to fill our time. As you already know, I have been making masks for friends and neighbours and asking a $5 donation to send to the Alfred hospital for staff welfare during this crisis. I have now made over 90 and have raised over $500, but think I am close to retiring from this project. All the neighbours have turned out their sewing kits and given me reams of stored elastic for this accidental and unplanned project.
Rod and I have also been trying to create a sourdough starter without much success, so if anyone has a good recipe for it we would love to try it.
During the first lockdown we went crazy in the garden, tidying and planting veggies, both in the back yard, and in the front yard for the neighbours. The front yard patch is now quite productive and we are receiving lovely responses, ie $5 and a thank you note in the letterbox, a contribution of home made beer on the front door mat, and a beautiful lemon curd tart from next door.
There are plenty of other projects in this house as we have been here for over 50 years, and there is enormous amounts of accumulated junk (all good according to the engneer I live with!).
I have also learned how to set up Zoom meetings for my book clubs, and kept in touch with friends via Messenger (another first for this teck dinosaur).
Keeps me occupied!!
Maggie has also sent along some insightful tales of engineers - a sample is 'Understanding Engineers, No. 7' - can send you the others if you would like!
An engineer was crossing a road one day, when a frog called out to him and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess." He bent over, picked up the frog, and put it in his pocket.
The frog spoke up again and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn back into a beautiful princess and stay with you for one week." The engineer took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to the pocket.
The frog then cried out, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess I'll stay with you for one week and do anything you want." Again, the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.
Finally, the frog asked, "What's the matter? I've told you I'm a beautiful princess and that I'll stay with you for one week and do anything you want. Why won't you kiss me?" The engineer said, "Look, I'm an engineer. I don't have time for a girlfriend. But a talking frog - now that's cool."
